Loved The Hero!

The story is about the marriage of a Highland Laird's daughter to the English Lord across the border for the sake of peace. The entire story is short and takes place over about two days. The premise was different and I liked that. Normally it is the English girl having to marry the Highland Laird. The English Lord in the story was written to be a great guy and definitely lovable.

The heroine is dead set against the marriage because she doesn't want to marry a guy who is English. That is her only real complaint. However, she is VERY resistant up until the last few pages. I did find myself a little frustrated that for all that resistance and drama, she made an about-face very quickly.

There are a few grammar things I noticed. Also, the heroine is said to be 18 in the afternoon and she is 19 by that night. The mistakes were not so numerous that it annoyed me, but I did notice it (grammar issues seem to be so prevalent in ebooks these days that I may just be getting used to them).

For 99 cents it is an entertaining short read. I would recommend it to someone looking for a short romance at a nice price.

Schuon depicts the archetype of Plains Indian spirituality

If you have ever had the feeling that Native Americans are the heirs to a wisdom tradition of which today's world stands sorely in need, this book will confirm your insight and deepen it. This beautifully produced volume focuses on the spirituality of the nomadic Plains Indians, whose traditional way of life is seeing the divine in nature. Schuon explains why this is neither a romantic, sentimental "deism" nor a profane "naturism." He gives a description of the Indian's soul, of his vision of the world and man's place in it with which we can compare our own, and the contrasts are both significant and informative.
As in his many metaphysical books, the author often makes references to other religions when illustrating a point. Parallels in the spiritual worlds of Shinto, Zen and ancient India appear here. Whatever the similarities and differences between one another, every traditional universe is marked by a sense of totality. There is an all-pervading sense of the sacred at the antipodes of the modern mentality that reflexively treats the world and life as blind "matter" which can be manipulated more or less at will, rather than as forms of the Spirit which command our respect and have principles to teach.

Schuon gives eloquent explanations of the rites and symbols central to North American shamanism, especially that of the sacred pipe. Although the practices of various tribes differed in many details, there is clearly an underlying homogeneity to their beliefs which has made the Indians themselves the symbol of a distinctive spiritual type. The author's colorful paintings are a moving complement to the text. They portray the archetype that has given rise to the Indian genius for combining heroism with a priestly dignity in harmony with the beauty and innocence of nature.

The authors, faculty respectively in a school psychology program and a school of library and information science, discuss bibliotherapy and offer a five-step model for programs developed collaboratively by librarians and mental health professionals. They see bibliotherapy as a continuum that runs from simple developmental bibliotherapy, as in the case of a child gaining personal insight from reading, to clinical bibliotherapy, as in the case of a seriously disturbed child gaining a better state of health. The book is not as clear as it could be in defining either its intended audience?is it for librarians in schools and public libraries??or its terms?who is a bibliotherapist? Furthermore, despite the book's collaborative premise, the chapter "Cautions for Bibliotherapy Leaders" implies that librarians will be solo bibliotherapists, a daunting prospect for some. The Dolls recommend, for example, that when a child mentions suicide, the librarian should "alert the parents immediately." And if the child has "made detailed and realistic plans for suicide...librarians and media specialists should consult immediately with mental health professionals to determine whether the child should be detained while parents are informed." He focuses on the two distinct Spanish Islamic communities of the late Middle Ages: the scattered Muslim settlements living under Christian rule in Castile, Aragon, and Navarre; and the independent kingdom of Granada. He gives a superbly integrated account of these two societies, their courageous defense of Islam and eventual destruction by the forces of Christian Spain. He saves the best for last ...

First, the review from Dulles, VA is spot-on correct.
Second, note that this book does not present a complete history of "Islamic Spain" from 711 to 1492 but rather just the last 250 years from 1250 to 1500. If you're looking for material on Cordoba and the zenith of Al-Andalus in the 10th Century, this is not the right volume.
With the exception of the intriguing situation in Navarre, the initial chapters that survey the role of Muslims who continued to live within Christian kingdoms during the period covered by the book can be a bit trying. However, I was intrigued by the discussions of the efforts that were made to acommodate Islamic law within Christian kingdoms.
Once Harvey gets all that out of the way and gets to the story of Granada, the book takes wing. The story of the shifting alliances between and among the various Iberian kingdoms, the influence of North Africa from across Gibraltar, court intrigues, the development of military technology (especially artillery), the Christians gradual destruction of Granadan agriculture, and other factors combine to provide ample material for a rich story covering the 250 years of Granada and its seemingly inevitable downfall. The account of the siege of Malaga alone makes the book worthwhile.
Having recently travelled in modern Andalucia, I have a good sense of where the critical events transpired. I join in the criticism that the book's maps are disappointing. For example, several Nasrid rulers abdicated to "Guadix" but it wasn't until I pulled out my Michelin road map of Andalucia that I was able to locate it at all. Apart from that, I recommend the book.

Thorough and Scholarly

This historical study, written by the former head of the Spanish and Spanish American Studies Department at the University of London, describes both the last surviving Moorish kingdom in Spain and the situation of Moslems in Christian Spain during the same period. The author has drawn on both Christian and Moslem source materials, sometimes quoting them at length. He describes the politics as thoroughly as these sources allow. Some of the material on the Mudejars living in Christian kingdoms is too detailed to sustain the interest of most readers. On the other hand, the final chapters about the decline and fall of Muslim Granada have some of the fatal momentum of Greek tragedy. The biggest disappointment is the maps, the line and dot variety that give no hint of the terrain the contesting forces had to cross.

Excellent. 1st class study of Islamic Spain

An excellent book, Harvey uses prime sources such as wansharisi and ibn al-Khatib and goes into great detail of not only the battles and decline of Islamic Spain but also the daily lives of the people who must have been living in unbearable circumstances watching their kingdom slowly decline. What makes this book especially special is Harvey's study of what caused the decline of Islam in Spain (only Chejne has gone into such detail) I especially liked the translation of a speech made by a father to his children concerning the decline of Islam and Islamic culture in Spain. Yes there were expulsions, yes Muslims were driven from their home, yes day by day it was becoming more and more difficult for them to practice their religion but another important factor was their slow immersion into the Spanish Christian world.

An excellent book, highly recommended I will be buying the second part of this study.
