Grade 8-10 Wimp, nerd, social retard some kids just naturally become scapegoats. Luckily an inner strength and an ability to survive sometimes surface, and these same scapegoats can confound their parents and acquaintances. Cole portrays this when fellow campers leave wimpy Howie Mitchell and ``real dog'' Laura Golden naked and scared on an island. When counselors arrive looking for them, Howie misunderstands and fears the return of their tormenters. He forces non-swimmer Laura to hang onto a log and float to the mainland. Reaching the safety of a deserted cabin, and realizing that they can't face returning to camp, they plot their survival until Parent's Weekend, when Laura's mother will visit, offering hope of sanctuary. Cole manages to instill just the right amount of suspense in their adventures through a potentially dangerous street kid, a cleaning woman who wants to turn them in to the police, and a sheriff who eventually snags them. Neither Howie nor Laura are initially likable kids, each either worrying or whining too much, but as they grow so does one's regard for them. The final distillation is a strong, well-blended story of modern day survival. A comparable book for older readers would be Lloyd Kropp's Greencastle (Freundlich, 1987). SURVIVING ON THE FRINGE OF SOCIETY

Wow, this book really holds your interest, hooking the reader's sympathy for the Boy and the Girl right from the start. You just Have to continue reading to see how they cope with sudden abandonment (supposed to be temporary) and decide to get even with the cruel kids at summer camp. Loss of clothing, money, self respect--just a malicious joke, you understand, to "punish" two social misfits.
Through no fault of their own, two pre teens were chosen to be their camp's annual sacrificial victims (i.e. goats), by being forced to spend a few embarrassing hours on a nearby island. Ha-ha--very funny to the terrified kids, who recognize their degrading situation and who ultimately reject the decision. Thus Howie and Laura (who did not even know each other) are forced to rely on each other's wits and daring (strengths they did not realize that they possessed) to reverse the kids' malicious decree. Not only to escape their dismal fate, but to survive on the outskirts of society for 3 days. They determine to get even, to pay them back for all the humiliation. Anything rather than endure the ridiule of returning to camp.
They decide to be proactive to preserve their own digntiy, to wait until the girl's mother comes up for Parents' Weekend. The plot rivets your attention for the kids must overcome incredible obstacles--posed by adutls and other kids--to live without the pale. It is unlikely that such social outcasts could be transformed so quickly into a cool "bandit" and a "fox wearing glasses", but the plot presents an interesting concept of social and physical survival. The book reads swiftly due to extensive dialogue, without the usual teenage platitudes. Their journey of self-discovery makes a fascinating read, with dark social undertones. For kids of all ages and adults harboring hurt kids inside. You will not be disappitned!

The Coming of Age Story

I read this book when I was 11 years old and I am now 21. I enjoyed every bit so much that I know it word for word. I think the book is excellent for the mature young reader because it captures some issues that most adults would be able to relate to only through metaphors. This promising book includes puberty issues, isolation issues, and issues of social and moral growth. This book is still one of my favorites and I recommend it to any young adult that has ever had to face dilemmas at a very young age. I challenge the young reader to find their similarities and differences between the Bryce (main character) and his companion with themself.

Outstanding war epic

This comic book series is quite an achievement. At a time when every comic book author is clamoring to break into superhero books, the creator of Yi Soon Shin followed his own path. And in doing so, he has developed something quite original. Comics about war are few and far between. Yi Soon Shin is based on a true story that takes place at the turn of the 16th century in Korea, making it a one-of-a-kind comic book series. I admire what clearly must've been a tremendous amount of research to recreate the battles that took place in the 1590s between Korea and Japan. I have no idea if they actually are accurate, but they are written with such detail that they certainly give the impression of being historically valid.

First to the art. It's quite beautiful. The few female character (this is a war story after all) are perhaps too sexy and perfect, but other than that, the style is quite amazing. The details of the clothing and armor, the weapons, the ships!, the violence and blood, the explosions are all lovingly rendered. It's quite glorious to read.

The writing itself is serious. No exaggerated superhero-ish storytelling here. The author, Onrie Kompan, does a convincing job of recreating feudal Korea. He does use American colloquialisms at times, such as "man up" and "All right boys, let `em have it," which threw me slightly at first. But after following the story for a while, I decided that he had made a good choice going that direction. First of all, we are talking about a translation of what would have been said in 16th century Korean and Japanese. There can't possibly be a true translation of the idioms of something so long ago. Second of all, I came to feel that what was more important was that he was representing the sentiments and actions sincerely rather than trying to mimic something that would vaguely sound like Shakespeare's English. In the end, that would've gotten in the way of the reader enjoying the story and truly following it. Better he took a more natural path that communicated the events. Once I got past that, I felt the writing was outstanding. The story has tremendous suspense and tragedy. Heroism and villainy. Romance and friendship. The dialogue is rendered with both subtlety and boldness. Yet all believable, and amazingly, based on historical records. I'm glad that I didn't discover this series until the first four issues were out because I would've been dying to find out what happens next. These first issues complete one full story arc and apparently there are a couple more arcs to come. I can't wait.

Make no mistake, this is not a children's book. The violence is brutal. The author does not sugar coat the war. It is as intense as anything you might find in Full Metal Jacket, Saving Private Ryan or Johnny Get Your Gun. It's as bloody as a John Woo movie but without the "coolness" of the action. Instead, it is rather horrifying and honest. Dark, no doubt about that. This is war, kids. Not play action. I never would've picked up a war comic under normal circumstances, but I'm glad I found this by accident at my local comic book shop.

Lastly, I would note that this entire series was pulled of without being supported by a major comic book publishing company. This is quite impressive because the quality of the book is to the highest standard. Someone like Dark Horse or Image Comics should pick this series up. I think there might be a graphic novel collection of these first four issues coming out soon. If you ever watched Shogun when you were a kid or enjoy epic drama then this series is worth your time. Highly recommended.

Warrior and Defender #3: Still Going Strong

This issue is such a tease. I was done reading it within ten minutes; and it only left me wanting more. The story is very strong (over all three issues to date). The writing is superb. The art is awesome. You cannot ask for much more in a comic book series. At this point, all I can say is that if you haven't picked up the first two issues, and you are reading this review, what in the hell are you waiting for? Catch up!

Totally can't wait until issue four releases.

not for children

This is my first comic book ever purchased. Everything seems to be good except this is definitely not for children. I purchased all three books thinking I can show them to my kids and have them learn about Yi Soon Shin, but sigh, these are not fitting for 9 and 11 year old boys... Well, I guess I'll keep these till my kids go to college. : )

Welcome to the floating city of Columbia

A lot of games these days have pretty weird characters. BioShock is one of them with its own kind of weirdness, especially the characters.

This is a large 184-page hardcover concept artbook published by Dark Horse.

The concept art features the environment, characters, weapons and other props such as propaganda posters. I like the environment art for the floating city of Columbia. It's beautiful yet mysterious.

There's plenty of character art, that of Elizabeth, Booker, Songbird and many of the grotesque and mechanical enemies, Heavy Hitters. It makes you wonder about the twisted minds of those in Columbia who created these monstrous beings. They have included quite a bit of discarded art that couldn't make it to the game as well.

The art is accompanied by some commentary and annotated handwritten text. No much. If you've not played the game, it's quite impossible to know what the game is about by looking at the art.

It's a nice companion video game artbook, but overall, I felt the art is not as refine as Deco Devolution: The Art of BioShock 2, but this is also sort of a different title.

A good artbook, but no commentary

This book is packed with unused concepts, as well as visual development of characters and concepts that did make it into the game, such as Elizabeth, Booker, and Songbird. The book itself is quite large and the artwork is arranged very well. The one thing that this book is lacking is commentary; there's almost none. There's quite a few little captions that don't say anything about the artwork that isn't already obvious, and the names of the artists are not clearly mentioned, there was a total lack of effort to get the artists involved with the book. The artwork alone is worth the money, but I really wanted to see what the artists themselves had to say about the process. The best artbook I have ever seen is the Art of the Hobbit, which was written by an actual member of the design team that worked on the movie, and was full to the brim with artist commentary on the process. I have seen a lot of artbooks that assume the reader has an extremely low attention span and isn't interested in anything except finished promotional art. This book doesn't stoop that low, but a caption did refer to a brilliant and detailed color painting as "a sketch." As an artist, it would have frustrated me to no end to see a concept I had spent so much time on referred to as simply a sketch. Having ranted a bit about the lack of commentary, I have to say that this is not actually a bad artbook. In my opinion it is worth 20 bucks just to see the pages dedicated to Songbird. If you ravenously devour all things Bioshock Infinite like I do, then you will probably want this on your shelf. We are going to need a more in depth look at the process somewhere down the road though, and I don't think the job of explaining how great the team at irrational is should be relegated to youtube videos of Ken Levine, as brilliant as he is.

This art book is incredible! High quality print. Full of production designs and concept illustrations. Tons of commentary notes and detail. Amazing collection of work spanning one of the finest games this generation!

After graduating from the United States Military Academy at West Point, Richard Fox served in the Army as a Field Artillery and Military Intelligence officer for almost a decade. During two two fifteen-month long tours in Iraq, he earned the Combat Action Badge, the Bronze Star, and received a Presidential Unit Citation.

He lives and works in southern Arizona with his incredible wife and two boys, amazing children bent on anarchy.

Not your great-grandfather's World War I!

I wasn’t expecting a historical fiction novel to be particularly unique, much less relatable, but this book is an interesting reboot of history. While the story stays true to real events, near as I can tell, there’s a gritty intimacy and modern flair here that you rarely find in history-based tales. For example, one of the most powerful scenes is where Richthofen has to wipe the blood off his face after shredding a British fighter from a dozen yards away. Sounds a little flat here, but you don’t read it… you experience the battle. The author gets all your senses fully engaged. I even found myself subconsciously rubbing my own face. This book nails the up close and brutal nature of WWI aerial combat like I’ve never seen before.

Of course, the fighting is only a fraction of the tale. The Baron’s personal life and the bond he shares fighting with friends, family and mentors really brings the history alive, true, but leads to my only complaint. I just couldn’t find the Red Baron sympathetic. He’s too, well, Prussian for my tastes. Which is historically accurate and all, but since this book lures you in and makes you think you’re reading a modern action thriller, you assume he’s the hero and you expect certain tropes. I was mildly disappointed that I couldn’t root for Richthofen as a “good guy.” Even though he lets the mask slip quite often, I still got the feeling, at the end of the day, that he’s just a stuck up aristocrat more interested in his career and reputation than anything else.

Still, whether you like the guy or not, he and all the supporting cast really come alive. All those stuffy, stale names from the history books dust themselves off and transform into scared young men doing their best to not just survive a war, but also win it. Proud and stubborn warriors coming of age who are sometimes brave, occasionally stupid, but always alive.
All in all, an entertaining read with a new angle on the historical fiction genre, so I’ll give it five stars.

The war hero was just a man.

This is the first work of fiction about the Red Baron that's ever portrayed him as a human being. I'm used to reading about the Red Baron as some sort of unfeeling hunter with a heart of ice. The Red Baron in this book suffers, has doubts, struggles with his role in the war and what he has to do as a leader and a soldier.
This novel has a lot of heart, which we don't see often in war novels. There's an unrequited romance angle that is wonderful and I wish had more attention. During the novel, and the actual history, Manfred was shot in the head. You'd think this would make someone stop fighting, but Manfred kept going despite a lot of pain and what we'd call PTSD nowadays.
Mr. Fox shows us why Manfred didn't quit, why his connection to the soldiers in the trenches was so strong and how he found the stregth to keep going. I wish I could give this book to soldiers still struggling even after the wars are over. Look at the Red Baron, famous for over a hundred years after he died and even he had to struggle with physical and mental issues.
If you're a fan of Shaara's war novels or historical fiction, then give this a read. Maybe pass this on to a veteran who might need a hero to lean on.

The Red Baron follows World War I flying ace Manfred von Richtofen’s transformation from a disgraced cavalry officer relegated to staff position to Germany’s pride of the skies, with over 80 documented air victories. While paying due respect to the aerial tactics that made Richtofen the uncontested fly ace of the war, The Red Baron also offers the reader an insightful look into the personal life of Richtofen, touching on some of the smaller details that could have motivated him to strive to achieve such aerial skill and then continue to fight despite the physical and mental tolls inflicted by constant battle. The Red Baron is a great read that puts a face and a heart to a legend.

About the Author
R. Dodge Woodson (Brunswick, Maine) holds the real estate license of Designated Broker. This is the highest classification of professional real licensure available. Woodson is the president and owner of Expert Realty Services, Inc., in Brunswick Maine. He bought his first piece of speculative land in 1974 and has been a progressive land developer in Virginia and Maine for the last 29 years. He has succeeded with both individual plots and large parcels that he subdivided. With nearly 30 years of experience as a residential land developer, Mr. Woodson has developed a process that makes failure virtually impossible.

Dissapointing

I am more than half way through the book and am finding it difficult to continue. The author continues to list the steps of the development process, but with each step he fails to explain how to perform each step or give case examples of how it was done in a particular development. Instead he says "you can hire a professional to do this step if you like." If you do not know how to perform a function, and you hire a professional to perform it for you, a) how can you make any money? and b) how can you be sure that your professional is performing the function correctly? So far this book has been a major dissapointment.
