Mistakes galore

This book needs to be re-edited. There are so many misspellings of people's names. For example, Bob Dylan is "Boy Dylan" in this book. On the same page, it calls Alan Freed "Alan Fred." Also, there is sometimes misleading information. For example, the book paraphrased a passage from a book on William Randolph Hearst, but when I read that passage in the original source, it was saying something completely different. The book can be confusing and seems to expect you to have previous knowledge of the subject and, therefore, often doesn't fully explain concepts.

Required book for my class so some sections are very bland and dry and hold some interesting viewpoints on our early American history. Not a terrible book but read it in the morning so you don't fall asleep.

Anastasiya Lipnevich, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor of Educational Psychology at Queens College and the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. Her research interests include instructional feedback, attitudes toward mathematics, alternative approaches to non-cognitive assessment, academic emotions, and the role of psychosocial characteristics in individuals’ academic and life achievement. Dr. Lipnevich has over 40 publications in refereed journals and edited volumes, has delivered more than 60 conference presentations and invited addresses, has chaired 10 symposia, serves on several editorial boards, and has co-edited several special issues in flagship journals. Dr. Lipnevich’s professional honors include, among others, Excellence in Dissertation Award from Rutgers University, the New Investigator Award 2010 from Division 3 (Experimental Psychology) of the American Psychological Association, and Postdoctoral Fellowship from Educational Testing Service.

My Treasury of Animal Tales & Rhymes

Bought this for my almost 2 year old daughter... bright, colorful illustrations. She loves pointing at things she recognizes as she flips through the book. This is probably her favorite one (among the three that I bought from this series) because of all the animals in it. The stories are too long to last her attention span at this age, but since she loves books, I am sure that she will eventually "grow into" them. I just do "picture stories" at this point... point to the picture and tell her what is happening in that picture... build a short enough story to last her attention span.

Great reference!

This book has very valuable information for fashion sketching students from an ARTISTIC perspective. Great for those who have had a bit of sketching experience. I use it in the second half of the semester to inspire and challenge my students. It covers Women, men, & children croquis and shows garment development from the outside form, then shows how to fill in proper amount of detail for rendering preparation. Also, very clear onactual rendering techniques.

Good soft cover book

This book was in good shape. Almost like new, but it would have been sturdier in hardcover (however it's much more expensive in hard cover). It is perfect for what I need it for and will hopefully last for a long time if I decide to keep it and not sell it. The content of the book is very good with showing examples of illustrations not only done by the author, which I liked. The illustrations were descriptive in their step-by-step directions on things like rendering patterns or colors, etc.

Happily surprised that it's in English

I think all the paperback editions were sold out and I was ready to type in everything in Google Translation to read this book.... But as a surprise it came in English text! I'm very happy with this purchase. There's a little bit tear in a few pages, but that's fine, given the price I paid.
I would just suggest the owner took off the (French Edition) out of the product title, as it might be avoiding many people placing the order.

Great book/cd package. Text and b/w photos provide a history of styles, locations and great practicioners of this fantastic and deep musical heritage. The recorded samples provided are both emotive and historical. Doing my own self-study of Indian music has me reaching for this set often. Included tal (rhythm) exercises will reveal how difficult even the basics of their rhythmic system is. Author George Ruckert is a longtime top member at the AACM college of Indian music in California and knows very well how to bridge the Westerner towards this foreign ocean of an art form. This book deals with true Indian classical, not Bollywood or moderised Indo-pop.
Also I highly, highly recommend the "Raga Unveiled" dvd set which along with the above book/cd may have you falling into, appreciating and beginning to get an understanding of this complex, spiritual and beautiful musical form.

Great resource.

Very helpful book. It, and its sister (Music in South India) will keep you busy! The excerpts on the CD are invaluable. You can learn a terrific amount from this book, both practical and theoretically, but be prepared to take your time if this is your first exposure.

Beware: this is a textbook.

Make no mistake, author George Ruckert knows of what he writes. The book is highly detailed, going into great (some would say too much) detail about the intricacies and complicated structures of Hindustani music.

But beware: this is a TEXTBOOK, and, by all appearances, one intended for a music class. There are rhythmic exercises (not easy), keys to understanding notation (if you've ever wanted to see "My Country 'tis Of Thee" notated in sargam, this is your book), and a constant barrage of italicized terminology (most of which is only briefly explained). Remember, this is a very slim volume: under 100 pages. So these 'lessons' come at the expense of historical analysis, elaborate definitions of terms and jargon (again, italicized terms are plentiful, but are defined briefly and without any attempt to help a reader understand beyond a simple translation), and longer biographies of notable artists.

I suppose I was looking for a different sort of book, one that eases the eager new explorer of this fascinating and beautiful music in with a thorough (but not dry) analysis of the cultural history, instruments, and trends of Hidustandi music as we know it today. This is not that book.

On page 7, Rucker reveals why: "For discussion of the basic elements of music and terminology, see [General Editor Bonnie] Wade's Thinking Music, in this Global Music Series." Well, darn. I wish I'd known when I purchased this book that it was merely a supplemental text to a larger textbook.

I did, with some effort, finish the book (though I will admit to skipping over some of the rhythmic exercises, which I found enormously difficult and, not having aspirations to actually PLAY Indian music, irrelevant to me), and managed to learn a bit despite the author's stuffy, needlessly thick style, but I am unfortunately left with more questions than answers.
