Very Good Book

I used this book as a primary preparation tool for the Sun Certified Business Component Developer (SCBCD) exam. Being a beginner in EJB, I found this book to be very friendly. I liked the layout of the book in general and the writing style of the author in particular. Only relevant pieces of code are presented to focus explanation of topic in question. A complete running application may be downloaded from the author's website. The multiple choice questions at the end of every chapter and ALERTs in every chapter made remembering main points easier. Deployment descriptor elements are clarified in considerable detail and they are explained well. Please note that there are errors in this book - some of them are fairly obvious such as using a capital letter as opposed to a small letter (Java versus java) while others are not so obvious but noticeable by experienced java developers. Regardless of its minor faults, I consider this book to be a valuable addition to my library. Normally I would have a cut a star for the errors but because of its content quality, I felt compelled to give 5 stars. I just passed the exam today thanks to this book. I know that I will not hesitate to buy another book from this author. Thanks Mr.Sanghera! I recommend this book highly without any reservations whatsoever.

There are a few mistakes in the book. Please be certain to check out the publisher's website for the IssueLog thread containing error encountered in the text. Despite those, this is a well-written and comprehensive book on a tough subject. I have learned alot in the process and I certainly feel alot more comfortable with EJBs.

About the Author
Hammond Innes (1913-1998) was a compulsive writer and traveller. He wrote over 30 books - thrillers with sturdy, plain-speaking British heroes at the centre; ordinary men caught up in impossible events. Innes journeyed all over the world, working as a journalist, whaler, soldier, but primarily sailing the high seas and racing in his yacht the Mary Deare. Surprisingly Entertaining

I picked up a used copy of this book on a chance at a 2nd-hand store--lucky! It turned out to be an engaging read and quite entertaining. The writing is very taut and well-crafted. The author is clearly in control of the plot development and characterization is excellent. The detail offered about ships--both sailing and steaming--is incredible and spang on accurate. The story unfolds at a good pace with enough texture to be completely credible yet rapidly enough to be engaging.

The novel opens with a prolonged nautical action sequence, then moves into a detailed court proceeding, and concludes with a few surprise twists and a nautical chase scene. Believable, enjoyable, and very well-written.

OutstandingAdventure Storry, Expert writing, Movie Potential

My wife picked up this book in a used bookstore in Seward,Alaska, while on a bike trip. We were looking for a cheep read and were shocked that we had bumbled onto a timeless classic. Half way through my wife, who is a professor and creative writer herself, got so exhited about the storry that she cut the book in half so that I could start on the beginning half of the book. The storry is outstanding (and I generally am not a fan of maritime themes), the writing rivals the great authors of the century, and the research is flawless. A must read. It is the second best book that I have ever read, behind "To Whome the Bell tolls"....this one is a lot less depressing.

for easy sailing fiction, this is as good as it gets!

Classic! Like several other reviewers, I just stumbled on an ancient paperback copy of this in a used bookstore, and what a little treasure it is! hard to believe that in 1956 you could pick this book up for just 35 cents, the same book I just bought for 2.50 (though at a mere 4.7% compound interest I guess it's just as well I bought it now, and not in 1956). I'm so happy to see it's still available; keep your expectations low and this is a fast-moving, cleanly written little sailing adventure that stands the test of time; absolutely perfect vacation, travel, or relaxing read. If you're looking for more: I still have not read the highly touted classic `Riddle of the Sands' but I imagine it's very similar.

The publisher did not update the content for several years even though there were pretty substantial changes in MLA format in 2009 and APA format in 2011. It was much easier to keep selling the same book with outdated documentation models for more money every year. Argh!

A sociologist analyzes emotions by taking a close look at how anger, laughter, shame, and crying emerge and decline in everyday situations. Katz (sociology, UCLA) has selected what would seem to be fruitful situations for his exploration of emotions. His study of anger is based on some 150 detailed reports of adult drivers who were asked to recount their enraging experiences while driving in Los Angeles. To examine laughter, he uses an equally dramatic technique, videotaping 187 episodes of individuals and families in a fun house equipped with distorting mirrors. His work on shame draws largely on statements and videotapes of eight-year-old boys striking out in Little League baseball games and persons involved in white collar crime investigations, as well as on the extensive literature on shame. Crying is studied through two disparate situations, the persistent whining of a preschool child and the breakdown of a criminal being questioned by the police. However, the prose in which the research and analysis is couched is unfortunately clotted with the professional jargon of social psychology. Learning that emotions are ``dialectical tensions between doing and being done by interactions with others,'' that ``the socioaesthetic properties of laughter appear to be a universal feature of socialized competence throughout Western civilization,'' or that someone's crying is a response to a crisis in ``the corporeal authentication of his narration'' is unlikely to enthrall the general reader curious about the phenomenon of road rage or wondering why tears may signal both great joy and great sadnesseven when illustrative liine drawings and stills from the videotapes supplement the text, and excerpts of annotated tape transcriptions offer a glimpse of a sociological researcher's extraordinarily detailed observations of subjects. A breathtaking analysis

Traditionally, emotions were seen as a topic unworthy of study by Sociologists, who saw emotions as "irrational." Recently, emotional experience has been retrieved as integral to social life, however, no analyst has managed to capture the nip and tuck of emotional experience as katz has. Drawing on Freudian theory, symbolic interactionism, and phenomenology, he shows how emotions influence social life through both their situated and their transcendent relevance. Must reading for any researcher who hopes to get a handle on this elusive phenomenon.
