Frederick Albert Cook (June 10, 1865 - August 5, 1940) was an American explorer and physician noted for his claims of achieving the first summit of Mount McKinley, in September 1906, and having reached the North Pole on April 21, 1908, which would have been a year before Robert Peary. Both claims have been largely discredited. Later, Dr. Cook was a founding member of the Arctic Club and Explorers Club. Robert Edwin Peary, Sr. (May 6, 1856 - February 20, 1920) was an American explorer who claimed to have led the first expedition, on April 6, 1909, to reach the geographic North Pole.

Peary's claim was widely accepted for most of the 20th century, rather than the competing claim by Frederick Cook who said he got there a year earlier. More recently, historians generally believe Cook did not reach the pole, and there are grave doubts that Peary did, though he may have been as close as five miles. Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton (February 1874 - January 5, 1922) was an Anglo-Irish polar explorer and one of the principal figures of the period known as the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration.

In January 1909, as leader of the Nimrod Expedition, he and three companions made a southern march which established a record-farthest south latitude at 88 degrees 23' S, some 97 geographical from the South Pole, the closest convergence in exploration history up to that time. For this achievement, Shackleton was knighted by King Edward VII on his return home.

Excellent Review of Vector Calculus

This book covers some of the most fundamental topics of vector calculus in a very clear manner. The presentation is lucid, the exercises are thought provoking, and the proofs are a good mix between intuitive and rigorous. I mainly bought this book because I wanted to "redeem" myself and obtain a better understanding of multivariable calculus after taking the course last semester, especially with surface integrals, Stokes Theorem, and the Divergence Theorem. I need to stress that this is best used as a refresher of vector calculus (if you had a good prof), or an avenue for deeper understanding (if you had a bad prof, like me). It is not supposed to be an outright introduction. In fact the authors warn us that:

"To begin with, you should, of course, be fluent in elementary calculus. Beyond that you should know how to work with functions of several variables, partial derivatives, and multiple (double and triple) integrals. Finally you must know something about vectors."

So, you need to know a little bit about multivariable calculus to be successful with self-studying this book. Oh, and this edition, I've heard, is a major change from the first edition in terms of notation, but not a whole lot different from the third and fourth editions, so save some money and get this one. You won't regret it.

The right book at the right time

The text is a very easy read revealing that
the concepts of vector calculus are much simpler
and easier to understand than the fog of vector calculus
notation would seem to indicate. This book got me through
my sophmore year at MIT with flying colors. I only wish
that I found it in time for my freshman year.

Since its publication in 1973, a generation of science and engineering students have learned vector calculus from Dr. Schey's Div, Grad, Curl and All That. This book was written [ circa 1992] to help science and engineering students gain a thorough understanding of those ubiquitous vector operators: the divergence, gradient, curl, and Laplacian. The Second Edition preserves the text's clear and informal style, moderately paced exposition, and avoidance of mathematical rigor which have made it a successful supplement in a variety of courses, including beginning and intermediate electromagnetic theory, fluid dynamics, and calculus.

Highlights of the Second Edition:

* Conversion from cgs to rationalized MKS units.
* A revised art program that includes many new figures and figures redrawn for greater clarity.
* A new section on simple connectedness.

This book is tremendous resource for anyone interested in making the most of their career and improving communication in the workplace. In the past 20 years, I feel that we've been streamlined into narrow fields of specialization, and this has led us to lose sight of the importance of focusing on the "big picture" and connecting with those around us. Beverly Jones taps into this idea just when we need it. She's right on target, and I plan to use the book as a resource in the college-level Business Communication classes that I teach.

Very effective strategies

I purchased this book in early December (2015), and I’ve been trying out the different solutions Bev suggests. They’re all practical, and those I’ve tried I’ve found to be effective. For example, in the chapter on building presence, Bev provides a checklist of key factors affecting how others see us. I recognized in myself the things I did to undermine my presence. So I’ve been following Bev’s suggestions for speaking more directly, without hesitation or self-deprecation/degradation. As a result, I’ve noticed that others pay more attention to what I’m saying and they respond more positively to what I say.

Plenty of other suggestions have been effective too, like ways to better understand what motivates the people around us, “managing the boss,” building self-confidence and the 80/20 rule about prioritization.

It’s a very worthwhile book. I highly recommend it to anyone starting a career or to others like me, who are looking to set a new career path.

Playbook for all

The best coaches are those who can demonstrate the value of positive action. Bev Jones embodies that skill. This brilliant book was a great choice as a Christmas present for myself and for a friend. Others have made great points here about its value. I want to recommend it especially for women. Jones's cogent advice hits home as I think about how many women I've known who have sabotaged their own careers because they have been raised to be quiet, to settle and to apologize without reason.

This book is a tonic. Jones offers a path out of self-sabotage and into success. She unfailingly shows that success of the best kind always occurs with grace and self-awareness. She proves that assertiveness does not need to be confused with aggressiveness.

Again, good playbook for all from an accomplished career coach.

About the Author
Liz O’Brien serves as chair of the Communication/American Sign Language/Theater & Film Department at Phoenix College, one of the Maricopa Community Colleges. She earned a B.A. in communication from the University of Arizona in 1985 and an M.A in communication from the University of Maryland in 1989. She accepted her position on the communication faculty at Phoenix College in 1990 and continues to thrive on the interaction with her diverse, urban student population. She received her campus’ Distinguished Teaching Award in 2000, and has been honored with several NISOD awards for teaching excellence. Her creative outlets include producing and directing the Storybook Stagecoach, a Phoenix College performing troupe that brings storybooks to life on the stage for young audiences. Additionally, she is a professional watercolor artist. Liz lives in a historic home in Phoenix with her husband, two cats, a garden full of plants and a pond full of fish.

Book good Quality, No Codes for McGraw-Hill Connect

Not very happy about the book not coming with the McGraw Hill Connect code as all of the 'new' books come with. The book is in good quality however. When delivered it was not a sealed book. If it were new this book does come wrapped in shrink wrap.

A DISAPPOINTMENT- PAID $80 FOR NO CONNECT ACCESS CODE

Wow was I angry when I received this book-- it was SUPPOSED to be wrapped in shrink wrap with an access code for the online learning. That is the sole reason I bought the brand NEW book. Now I have to go through the trouble of returning it and waiting for another book to arrive. It was a bit of a disappointment. In all honesty, it would've been much more useful if it clarified in the description that the online access code to McGraw Hill Connect was NOT included. The book was in new condition though, I must admit.

it's better than Cats

The cover told me I'd laugh reading She Kills Monsters, but it didn't tell me I'd also cry. (Which means, obviously, it's better than Cats.) In a manner not unlike Community's brilliant D&D episodes, Nguyen uses the framework of tabletop fantasy roleplaying games to literalize an emotional journey. Agnes realizes she didn't really know her geeky younger sister, who's been killed in a car crash. This younger sister left behind a D&D module (a scenario for play), and by playing through it, Agnes learns who her sister really was. The play warps back and forth between fantasy and reality with style, setting up wonderful parallels between the fantasy versions of the characters and their real selves.

There's just so much to love here: the sharp dialogue, the foregrounding of women's stories in a genre and game that's been traditionally (unfortunately) all too male-centric, the awesome stage combat opportunities (again a field where women tend to be marginalized), and finally those moments when reality and fantasy bridge for stunning emotional payoffs that made my hairs stand on end. There's a few beats here where the fantastic and the real collide in huge emotional payoffs that made my hair stand up on end.

I haven't read the "Young Adventurer's Edition," but I imagine this could work beautifully in a high school group: Geography Club with swords and dragons and six women/three men. Smart and insightful about both geek culture and teen LGBT issues, this play would be right in the wheelhouse of student groups both in high school and college. (Not that it's a "school" play—this stands on its own. But I imagine it will have a strong and long life in educational theatre for many reasons.)

I'm a sucker for theatre that plays with the fantastic: not the absurd, but straight-up sci-fi/horror/fantasy tropes. A theatre that's in dialogue with pop culture is a more vibrant theatre, one that is a part of the conversation, not apart from it. And like the best genre fiction, She Kills Monsters uses the fantastic to look at the real, and does it from an angle that can make it all seem fresh.

I recently played Tilly in this show and though it seems simple and funny, it's actually very deep and emotional with so much heart. What a journey it was both to read it and have the opportunity to perform it. Definitely requires mature actors and audiences with a great sense of humor as there is a lot of adult content. Audiences loved it whether they were familiar with the D&D world or not. Enjoy!

Fun script. I read both versions and this one's content is definitely better for high school kids than the full version.

If stage combat and theatrical magic is not your thing, then you probably do not want to stage this play... but you might want to read it for the fun...

on the other hand, if you want a contemporary action packed FUN show - this is the one for you!

Wonderful Book

A very thoughtful book about the creative process. I very much enjoyed it and would highly recommend it. I found the book to be insight on the idea that becoming a great artist, or great at anything for that matter, is a lonely process. But you must push through and trust yourself.

Very thought-provoking, thoroughly enjoyed

I finished this book in about an hour. It flowed really well and was enjoyable and thought-provoking overall. There were several times that I ended up pausing to think about what was written, and I even took some notes. Here are some of those thought-provoking quotes from the book:

"The physical act of creation is what creates value. Ideas do not."

"If the goal is to catch 100 fish, do the simplest thing to catch 100 fish."

Mr. Knapp also talks about creating an "artisan business" which was novel to me. There's a difference between a hobby and artisan business, he says. An artisan business is all-encompassing. It's about your life's work. A hobby isn't as serious. I really loved thinking about this.

Thoroughly enjoyed the book. I got quite a bit out of it as a soul-searching, what-do-I-do-with-my-life 20 something. Would recommend.

Quick and easy read with some great points

This was a worthwhile read that made some interesting points to consider. I bookmarked several pages that I thought had especially good thoughts on the creative process. I didn't fully agree with everything the author wrote and I also noticed a few places that could use more editing (including what was either a typo or a grammar error). Overall, I really enjoyed the read and I will most likely come back to it for reference in the future.
