I truly enjoy this book and would recommend it to anyone in the profession or interested in becoming a part of it. While the book is very informative,including many facts and figures, it reads like one is having a session of "shop talk" with the author and telling war stories. I rarely have a hard time putting nonfiction down, but this book is truly a gem.

When Professor Frederic M. Now, nearly six decades later, that prediction has certainly proved accurate.

This new edition of Wheelock's Latin has all of the features, many of them improved and expanded, that have made it the bestselling single-volume beginning Latin textbook:

• 40 chapters with grammatical explanations and readings drawn from the works of Rome's major prose and verse writers;
• Self-tutorial exercises, each with an answer key, for independent study;
• An extensive English–Latin/Latin–English vocabulary section;
• A rich selection of original Latin readings—unlike other Latin textbooks, which contain primarily made-up texts;

About the Author
Frederic M. Wheelock (1902-1987) received the A.B., A.M., and Ph.D. degrees from Harvard University. His long and distinguished teaching career included appointments at Haverford College, Harvard University, the College of the City of New York, Brooklyn College, Cazenovia Junior College (where he served as Dean), the Darrow School for Boys (New Lebanon, NY), the University of Toledo (from which he retired as full Professor in 1968), and a visiting professorship at Florida Presbyterian (now Eckert) College. He published a number of articles and reviews in the fields of textual criticism, palaeography, and the study of Latin; in addition to Wheelock's Latin (previously titled Latin: An Introductory Course Based on Ancient Authors), his books include Latin Literature: A Book of Readings and Quintilian as Educator (trans. H. E. Butler; introd. and notes by Prof. Wheelock). Professor Wheelock was a member of the American Classical League, the American Philological Association, and the Classical Association of the Atlantic States.

Richard A. LaFleur is Franklin Professor of Classics�Emeritus�and former Head of Classics at the University of Georgia; he has served as Editor of the�Classical Outlook�and President of the American Classical League, and is a recipient of the American Philological Association's national award for excellence in the teaching of Classics. An even more attractive edition of Wheelock ... supplementary readings still required!

Wheelock is an excellent textbook in many ways, and this new edition makes it more attractive than ever (load of new photos, comprehension questions to accompany the readings, etc.) As before, the presentation of the grammar is clear and well-organized, and there are lots of great ancillaries to help you get through the book. By far its biggest draw-back, however, has not been ameliorated: the lack of reading passages of any significant length. This means that the course, while teaching the grammar and syntax quite nicely, does not develop proficiency in reading Latin as much as it should. Students who finish Wheelock often have great difficulty making the transition to reading actual Latin texts (if the assignments are of any significant length). To avoid this, a student learning from Wheelock (or really any traditional "grammar-translation" method) should supplement his or her studies with extended reading passages as soon as possible (certainly from the latter half of Wheelock to the end).

It isn't necessarily easy to find a decent amount of reading material suited to this purpose, but it seems to be getting easier: there has been something of an explosion in this genre in recent years. One choice for more significant supplementary readings might be War with Hannibal: Authentic Latin Prose for the Beginning Student. It presents a considerable amount of a real Latin (enough to get you acquainted with reading Latin prose, yet not so much that you can't finish the book), and includes helpful notes geared toward the beginning student. Of course there's also the beautiful new reader by Prof. LaFleur, Scribblers, Sculptors, and Scribes: A Companion to Wheelock's Latin and Other Introductory Textbooks. Another possibility -- if you are brave -- is Augustus' Res Gestae. Res Gestae Divi Augusti (Greek Commentaries Series) is quite inexpensive (though the notes could be a bit more thorough for the beginning student). You could also try reading some of the graded passages in Reading Latin: Text (say starting with the adapted Cicero about half way through the book). I myself am not crazy about 38 Latin Stories Designed to Accompany Frederic M. Wheelock's Latin (Latin Edition) (the Latin -- even from the latter half of the book -- feels too Anglicized). Many people like it though, and the main point is to read!

In any case, this lovely new edition of Wheelock not withstanding, you really *must* supplement the textbook with as much reading as possible. It really is the only way to become a fluent reader (and feel prepared to some degree when you finish your textbook and begin to read real Latin texts). Exercises and discrete sentences are fine, but they are no substitute for reading, reading, reading!

Don't Get The Kindle Version

The textbook seems to be, so far, comprehensible and well-written, but I would not recommend the kindle edition. The charts, diagrams and other inserts are completely illegible on my kindle. For the price, you should definitely stick to the paperback version.

Contrary to the previous review written by Samantha Toffolo, I recommend the kindle edition. I found the diagrams, albeit small, completely legible. You can always download the sample and see for yourself. besides, diagrams only take up 5% of the book, while the maps and paintings are superfluous anyways, they don't help you learn Latin.

Why I highly recommend the kindle edition is that you can set bookmarks. At the end of each chapter you are told to go to the back of the book to do exercises. In the paperback, this is like going from pg50 to pg600 for exercises then pg650 for the answers. Have you ever had to flip to the end of a colossal book for footnotes or glossary? It's a pain. Not only can I set bookmarks on kindle and go to them with a flew clicks, I can preview bookmark pages, i.e., they're superimposed on the page you have open. So if I'm quizzing on pg600, I don't even have to go to pg650, its overlayed on top. I can't stress how convenient this is and how convenient bookmarks in general are for such a large book, not to mention the search feature and the ability to use a latin-english lexicon.

Another reviewer didn't like all the additions, particularly the graffiti section and the added exercises. I also disagree because Lefleur knows this book will be used not only by students but by those self-teaching, such as myself. Anything that will make Latin more fun and accessible is great in my opinion. The book is big though, but as another reviewer states, there isn't enough reading material and I agree. However, if you added reading material this book would be even larger, which is unrealistic. Unless of course, you have a kindle.

The first sentence of this essay, which was originally published in T. S. Eliot's New Criterion, in 1926, includes references to both the consolations of angels and the indignities of the dentist's chair, and this almost gleeful waywardness is characteristic of what's to come. By turns lyrical, self-mocking, and outlandish, Woolf's meditation on the perils and privileges of the sickbed lampoons the loneliness that makes one "glad of a kick from a housemaid" and extolls the merits of bad literature for the unwell. As Hermione Lee points out in her excellent introduction, the author only hints here at the mental and physical illnesses that plagued her throughout her life, but one's knowledge of them gives the references to "waters of annihilation" and "deserts of the soul" an added resonance. And yet the consolations of creation are also considered. When Woolf imagines beauty in a frozen-over garden, even after the death of the sun—"There, thrusting its head up undaunted in the starlight, the rose will flower, the crocus will burn"—it seems less a triumph of nature than of art.

Woolf's essays, most famously A Room of One's Own, have been as liberating and nourishing as a freshening wind or drought-ending rain, and so the resurrection of this forgotten work on illness is a boon indeed. Written between two of Woolf's greatest novels, Mrs. Dalloway and To the Lighthouse, this is Woolf at her spangled best. Seemingly a cascade of gossamer thoughts, her prose is in fact as tightly knit, strongly patterned, impervious, and purposeful as a fisherman's sweater. Woolf wonders why illness, which is as much a part of life as love and greed, is not a common theme in literature, then reveals its import in lyrical yet ironic descriptions of illness' slow-motion parallel world, where the afflicted have time to watch the sky or carefully observe a rose. Illness is an altered state, says Woolf, who suffered from myriad chronic conditions, one that grants significant revelations. On Being Ill is a small masterpiece. This is a unique book--compassionate, intelligent, affirming, and comforting, both for the "healthy" among us, and those who have experienced illness. This is Woolf at her best: brilliant, daring, probing, and Hermione Lee's Introduction is a gem.
Also, for those of us who care about design, the book is a beauty, a work of art in itself.

A precious gift to readers

From its magnificent cover, to its brilliant and sensitive insights into the psychology of illness--being ill, being near someone who is ill, anticipating being ill or well again--this book is a jewel. I love the way it feels in my hands. I love the way my eyes roam over the pages. I love the way it feels beneath my pillow. I've given it to friends and they have given it to their friends. And I am so pleased that Paris Press--"beautiful and daring feminist books"--has reprinted it as Woolf and Vanessa Bell intended. Precious!

Axel Bangert holds a doctorate from the Faculty of Modern and Medieval Languages, University of Cambridge. The Nazi Past gets Personal

In The Nazi Past in Contemporary German Film, Axel Bangert examines the change in how the Nazi period is portrayed since reunification. This change seems to be reflected in both a more personal style as well as a shift from a dominant tone of guilt to one of shame. The book covers both television and film productions and both documentary and fictional portrayals.

One aspect which seems to bother some people about such portrayals is that there is less of a distinctive line drawn which makes it more difficult to simply point and proclaim evil. While that may well be understandable for some to find problematic it also presents the period in a more realistic light. To draw a parallel which I acknowledge can only go so far, American Civil War films used to draw simplistic lines of right and wrong (even to the extreme of glorifying the side which had by far the worse human rights record in Griffith's Birth of a Nation) then started portraying the human side. It was the sense of many southerners who had little or nothing to do directly with slavery that their "way of life" was being infringed upon and thus were pulled into a war of which they had almost no political interest. The suffering their families suffered even while supporting the Confederacy allowed the human side of the "evil" foe to give a more holistic view. Certainly the parallel can only go so far, it was a different kind of genocide and carried out at a different pace. But the personalization of the stories being told allowed some degree of healing to begin. In other words, the German cinema does not need to keep beating themselves up just to make the rest of the world feel like Germany is still paying a price, but rather they can find a way to tell the smaller stories, many of which fall into that grey area of evil vs good, in order to help a reunified country heal and move on.

This book is a wonderful addition to either an academic or a popular library where there is an interest in film studies. It is a descriptive book primarily, not prescriptive, so to expect something that presumes to take the past to task for not addressing what is not covered by contemporary German film is not reading the book on its terms. After reading this, one could easily find avenues for further study in any number of areas from film studies to cultural studies and sociological applications as well.
