A gripping, honest look at Oakland, California, through the story of a victim

Oakland has a lot of defenders and detractors. It doesn't have a lot of people doing the heavy lifting to offer an educated, entrancing look at some of Oakland's most pressing problems. James O'Brien is a heavyweight, a writer who clearly knows his city. This single expands on an article O'Brien wrote for San Francisco Magazine, which got a lot of buzz here in the Bay Area (I live in Oakland). The single gives O'Brien some well-earned (and much appreciated) legroom to take the narrative further.

Until You Bleed follows Caheri Gutierrez, a beautiful young Oaklander whose life was turned upside down when a stray bullet exploded her jaw. O'Brien uses Gutierrez's story not as a ham-handed representation of life in Oakland, but as a prism through which the city's problems and complexities multiply. His affection for his subject is clear, though he's notably frank about her long and trying recovery. The writing is superb, crisp and quick, and the storytelling is masterful. It took me an hour or two to read at the coffee shop, and I don't think my eyes left my Kindle screen once.

If you want a glimpse of Oakland that goes beyond the usual canned articles that pop up every few months, I'd definitely recommend this one.

Well written account about a tough young lady.

An interesting account of the up and down life of a smart tough young person. She was on the fast track to a college scholarship when her Oakland neighborhood got the best of her and she fell off that fast track, then after a terrible tragedy, she found the courage to come back and over come that horrible shooting. I just hope this great young writer does a follow up in a year or two, so we can see if she continues her wonderful progress.

A raw, captivating look into the rampant impact of violence in Oakland--a city with so much pride and so much pain. An engaging read by a writer who clearly knows Oakland--the history, the struggle, the pain, the hope, the possibilities.

As an Oakland resident who shares in the struggle between fear and pride, I am encouraged by the courage of this young woman to use her tragedy as a platform for healing and change.

No answers to chapter review questions?

Let me start by saying I took my boards 11 years ago and only purchased this book as a resource to study for the CSCE portion of NERB, so I can obtain my licensure in another state. I do not have to take the boards again, but if I did and purchased this book for that purpose, I would be even more upset. The website listed does not have answers for the review questions to the 7th edition yet - only the 6th. The questions for the 6th obviously are different than the 7th edition. I realize this book was published about a month ago, with that said, I still feel like the online portion of the text should be up and running as soon as the book is available for purchase (that is the abridged version of this review).

I LOVE Mosby's review and it was definitely my study bible when I was studying for my written boards in 2000, so figured getting an updated version would be a smart move. The CSCE is not nearly as difficult as the boards, but being I took my written over 11 years ago, just wanted to brush up on materials. I started reading over the material this morning and when I went to work on the review questions, noticed the answers were not there and could only be found online. First of all, I am all about modern day conveniences and I am online more than I should be (thanks to my iphone), but I have a toddler and trying to study for this test while home with her is impossible enough. I bought an actual book so I can take it with me to the park or the gym - I personally do not want to have to look the answers up on a website (which of course is not even just a simple [...], rather [...]). Seriously? Anyhow, I digress. When I finally have a moment to look up the answers I am shocked to find that THEY ARE STILL IN THE PROCESS OF ADDING THIS PORTION OF THE 7TH EDITION!!!!!! Trying to find answers to questions online was already considered an inconvenience for me, so you could imagine how I felt when the website states they are still working on the 7th edition study materials. So now, I paid full price for the newest edition of a book that I really did not need but felt compelled to purchase because I am a hygienist (obviously Type A) and HAD to have the most updated information so I can review for the CSCE. Of course, I could look up the answer one by one, but did I mention I have a toddler? Not happening! Should have bought a used 6th edition on Amazon for a fraction of the cost!!

So, now I have to call the publisher and see how I can acquire an answer key! Great!!! Can not wait!!

I am giving the book 2 stars because the content itself is very helpful. If the answers to the study questions were available, I would give the book 5 stars!!! If someone affiliated with this book can somehow help me, please do!!!

Way too much information

I am getting ready for the board exams and needed something to summarize the material. Unfortunately, summarizing is something I did not get. The information is written in organized way, but includes topics that are not needed. Some topics are discussed too deeply. Although it is a decent book to prepare for the boards, I would not use it as a primary source.

Mathematics in undergraduate economics tends to be underutilized to the detriment of student comprehension of economic principles. Usually introductory texts shy away from even basic algebra, and intermediate theory texts, if using calculus at all, often relegate the mathematical treatment to appendices and footnotes. The traditional mathematical economics texts, in contrast, focus on presenting the mathematical techniques with economic applications interspersed throughout, but with no coherent progression of the economic theories.

With this text I seek to convey the utility of mathematics—the conciseness of expression, preciseness of assumptions, and the advantages in manipulation—for economic analysis. The mathematics employed (including derivative and integral calculus, exponential and logarithmic functions, first order difference and differential equations, matrix algebra, linear and nonlinear programming) are motivated by the economics. Accordingly, the coverage of economic theory is organized into three parts: "Analysis of Markets," "Optimization," and "Macroeconomic Analysis." We progress from models of perfectly competitive markets for single commodities, to the optimizing behaviors of the firms and households operating in markets characterized by perfect and imperfect competition, to the aggregate markets of macroeconomic models. Mathematical concepts and techniques are introduced at appropriate points in the presentation of the economic theories and then reinforced throughout the text. The primary objective of Using Mathematics in Economic Analysis is for students to develop mathematical skills that can open up a new dimension of economic analysis, thereby enhancing their understanding of economic theories.

FEATURES

The emphasis throughout the text is not on mathematical theorems and formal proofs, but on how mathematics can enhance our understanding of the economic behavior under study. The careful development of economic topics strives for a coherence not often found in mathematical economic texts. A premium is placed on clear explanation, with a blending of mathematical, verbal, and graphical exposition. Numerical illustrations of the economic models are used extensively to aid understanding. Frequent practice problems are provided throughout each chapter, with answers at the end of the chapter to give immediate feedback to students, bolstering confidence and building a secure foundation as they progress through the material. The end-of-chapter exercises are comprehensive and challenging. Moreover, key terms in economics (in bold) and mathematics (in italics) are listed at the end of the chapter (with page references), and a glossary of concise definitions is provided at the end of the text.

ORGANIZATION

In the first chapter, the construct of an economic model and the concept of equilibrium are discussed and illustrated with the example of a competitive market for a commodity. Then Chapter 2 provides a review of some basic mathematics; including sets, derivatives, limits, and integrals.

In Chapter 3, which begins Part I of the text, "Analysis of Markets," we use derivatives to establish conditions for the static stability of market equilibria and for comparative static analysis, inverse functions to illustrate different market adjustment mechanisms, and integral calculus to find consumers' surplus and producers' surplus. We shift to dynamic analysis in Chapter 4, beginning with first order difference equations. As a bridge between the discrete time of period analysis and continuous time we review exponential and logarithmic functions. The discussion of compound interest leads us to natural exponential and natural logarithmic functions, which are part of the solution of the first order differential equations also used in the dynamic modeling of a competitive market. In Chapter 5 we expand beyond a single competitive market to general competitive equilibrium. To build up to the matrix algebra needed for solving systems of linear equations, we first review vectors. A technique known as Cramer's rule is introduced, which will prove especially useful in the comparative static analysis for systems of equations.

In Part II, "Optimization," we look behind the market to the underlying optimizing behavior of firms and consumers. Chapter 6 develops the short run decision rules for a firm in selecting the profit-maximizing levels of output and labor employment. The powerful Implicit Function Theorem is introduced to enhance our ability to do comparative static analysis. Perfectly competitive and monopolistically competitive firms are addressed in Chapter 7, along with the concept of price elasticity of demand. Monopolies and monopsonies—at the other end of the theoretical spectrum—are the topics of Chapter 8. We will see how a monopolist may practice price discrimination to bolster profits and how a union can diminish, if not negate, the power of a monopsonist in a labor market. Chapter 9 completes our modeling of market structures by examining duopolies and oligopolies, where the firms in the market, few in number, are actively engaged in competition. The introduction to game theory follows naturally from the discussion of the firms' interdependent decision-making.

The progression from free optimization with one independent variable (e.g., perfectly competitive firms in Chapter 7) to two and more independent variables (e.g., a monopolist with two plants in Chapter 8) allows us to illustrate partial differentiation and the Implicit Function Theorem for the analysis of systems of equations. We then turn to constrained optimization. In Chapter 10 the long run decision of a firm in selecting the cost-minimizing input combination for producing a given output is modeled using the Lagrange multiplier method. With linear programming and nonlinear programming in Chapter 11, we extend the analysis to incorporate optimization under more than one constraint and to illustrate the concept of duality. Chapter 12 concludes Part II of the text with the application of constrained optimization to the theory of consumer behavior. In particular, the labor-leisure tradeoff of a household is modeled.

Part III, "Macroeconomic Analysis," parallels the first part of the text in that the treatment advances from static analysis to comparative statics to dynamic analysis. Chapter 13 begins with a discussion of input-output models. Then a Simple Keynesian Model is developed and applied to two countries to illustrate a phenomenon known as the foreign repercussions effect. In Chapter 14 we build up from the Simple Keynesian model (product market only), to the IS-LM model (addition of the money market), to the Aggregate Demand-Aggregate Supply Model (incorporation of the labor market and aggregate supply constraints). Again partial differentiation and matrix algebra are extensively used in the derivation of the multipliers associated with the various versions of the macromodels. The policy implications of the derived multipliers are discussed. The coverage of growth rates and growth models in the concluding Chapter 15 reinforces the use of natural exponential and natural logarithmic functions and first order differential equations, as well as derivative and integral calculus.

ALTERNATIVE ORGANIZATION

Covering all fifteen chapters in one semester may be challenging. Twelve chapters may be a more reasonable objective. Two basic options for using the text are: (I) Chapters 1-12-which emphasizes the microeconomics (leaving out Part III, "Macroeconomic Analysis"); and (II) Chapters 1-9 and 13-15-which allows for coverage of both microeconomics and macroeconomics (leaving out Chapters 10-12 on constrained optimization). Skipping the dynamic analyses in Chapters 4 and 15 would further reduce options I and II to eleven and ten chapters respectively.

INSTRUCTOR'S MANUAL

Available with the text is an Instructor's Manual, which provides answers to all of the end-of-chapter problems. The practice problems in the text are designed for students to work through themselves as they progress through each chapter. The end-of-chapter problems, of varying degrees of difficulty and often with several parts, can be assigned as homework exercises.

Using Mathematics in Economic Analysis can be adopted effectively for different audiences. I believe the text is most appropriate for an undergraduate coursed in mathematical economics where students have completed a first course in calculus and intermediate microeconomic theory and, perhaps, intermediate macroeconomic theory. About the Author

Garry Robins is Professor in the Melbourne School of Psychological Sciences at the University of Melbourne. He has won research awards from the Psychometric Society and the American Psychological Association, and is a past winner of the Freeman Award for the scientific study of social structure. He is co-editor of the journal Network Science, a member of the Board of the International Network for Social Network Analysis, and former editor of the Journal of Social Structure. His research has been centred on the development of exponential random graph models for social networks, as well as a wide range of empirical and applied social network studies from cattle herding to criminal networks, from drug-sharing to environmental management, from little data to Big Data.

A very good introduction to SNA

This is my very first Amazon review because I am so glad that I found this book. This introductory book is very user-friendly, even if you are new to SNA and have very limited knowledge of matrix algebra like me. The explanations are clear, and examples are helpful. There's some math, but manageable. I particularly appreciate the "insider's story" in which the author shares the walk-through of his own experiences in two research: what challenges he encountered, how he reached a solution, etc.

About the Author

Dr. Clarence W. de Silva, P.E., Fellow ASME and Fellow IEEE, is a professor of mechanical engineering at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, and occupies the Senior Canada Research Chair Professorship in Mechatronics and Industrial Automation. He earned Ph.D. degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA and the University of Cambridge, England, and received an honorary D.Eng. degree from University of Waterloo, Canada. De Silva has received several awards, made 32 keynote addresses at international conferences, and served as editor on 14 journals. He has 21 technical books, 18 edited books, 44 book chapters, 220 journal articles, and 250 conference papers in publication.
