Some topics here are rarely found elsewhere

This book covers topics rarely found anywhere else. Hands-on hardware experience, or a book like this is required to actually build and/or simulate sensors with fidelity required to fully understand their behavior and performance. Phase noise is one example, and the authors add a twist rarely seen, that phase noise is aliased into the doppler target region by PRF harmonics above the target in frequency. That is, PRF modes, like rain or ground clutter, carry power spread into the target region through phase noise "down" instead of only up in frequency (as we usually expect) over the doppler passband. Once described its rather obvious, but until such exposure, it's a phenomena likely to be missed. For that and other similar revelations this book has value. Sadly, Artech books have a nasty habit of passing over typos, thus making equations excessively frustrating to guess at what the author meant; they have weak, almost pointless indexes (though this volume's index is quite good); and we learn nothing about the authors. Even so, Artech remains one of the paramount sources of radar and electrical engineering. A good book, offered as part of the course at Georgia Tech (this book's authors) when available.

BRAVO from this artist!

Thank God for gifting Mr. Hagman with the abililty to articulate such a book! Only a true artist and gifted therapist could so clearly write something this revealing. I know my own creative process because I "do" it. Still, I found new ideas, clarification and immense confirmation within the pages of this book.

If you are simply an artist who identifies with the work of modernists such as Bonnard, Matisse and Joseph Cornell---and you have struggled to understand/explain yourself---you should probably read this book. Without a psychology background some of the terminology might interrupt the flow so be prepared to keep a dictionary close by. If your experience upon reading is similar to mine, though, you will cherish and use your new vocabulary. Email me if you want to know more specific info.

What I learned from this book (I've read it twice in 1 week) will surely play out in my art and my clinical experience as a therapist. BRAVO!

Good book about basic and advanced clinical procedures

Although now little outdated basically a good book about basic and advanced clinical procedures. I like the section with retrograde intubation, with approaches that I haven't encountered earlier. I recommend it to the anesthesiology residents who are about to approach their patients for the first time with invasive thoughts in their minds. :)

Really falls short

I'm happy to be writing the first review of this book. I'll mention that I have 3 similar books on how to draw monsters, etc. so I am trying to be non-biased and objective. Before the actual review, here is how the book is set up:

1) Form and Structure (spheres, blocks, cones, wedges, and gravestones)

2) Figure Drawing (Man vs. inhuman)

3) Monsters In Your Face (Perspective and Foreshortening)

4) Light, Shadow, Tone and Texture

5) Zombies

6) Vampires

7) The Monster (Frankenstein)

8) Werewolves

9) Composition (drawing monstrous groupings)

10) Hard-Lining It (inking)

11) Storyboards

Now, just so you have some idea of what I expect from an instruction book of this type, I'll tell you, so you can fully understand why I rate it the way I do. What was negative to me may not be to you. The "ideal" book of this kind, is one which shows step-by-step how to draw the monsters, talking plenty about lighting and shadow (because let's face it, why bother drawing monsters without creepy atmposhpere). But the critical thing, which would set the book apart from EVERY OTHER BOOK I've read, is it would show you how to draw the more difficult monsters (werewolves, for example) from multiple angles (at least side and front) so you can TRULY understand how to draw it from any angle. None of the books I've read do that. Just one picture from one specific angle. Kinda cool, but you don't go away from it feeling like you really "own" the material.

Now for the review. I'll just hit the highlights here, and not talk about every single chapter. Here are the negatives first:

*As a general rule, this book follows the following pattern: introduce your subject for that chapter, then show a bunch of fully finished drawings/comic panels from various professional artists, called "Artist Spotlight". After about a third of the way through it starts to feel like a book of art rather than an instruction book. Let me give you a specific example: the chapter on zombies and vampires has literally NO instruction whatsoever. NOTHING. Just a bunch of example pictures of fully finished art.

* The chapter on figure drawing, along with being very out of place, is just wasted space here. There is hardly any info there, just again a few random pictures. Could've been left out, easily.

*As a side note, most of the art in the book is black and white, but there is some color. I didn't mind, necessarily, and thought it kind of added a bit of character to it, like the old monster movies.

Now for the positives:

* The werewolf chapter does show a few different drawings/inkings of various styles of werewolves. Both sketched and more fully inked. They even mention that it is important to be able to draw these creatures from many angles, which got me excited, but then proceed to show it from the front and back... no side view!

*The chapter on storyboards is actually the highlight of the book. It shows some actual storyboards used in the remake of "Dracula" back in the 90's. Very cool to see how it is done.

I hate to be critical of books, especially ones like this that I have been waiting and praying for, but this just fell short. Very little instruction, too much filler about artists (which could've been a chapter at the end, or an appendix), and just too short in general. I've noticed most of these books are 144 pages. If that's something the publisher is setting a limit on they need to stop that. These books need to be longer and more thorough. Make one that is 200 pages, shows multiple angles and multiple examples of every monster, and show different lighting/shadow strategies. When someone does that, they'll have the definitive book on this subject.

Stands out from the crowd

There are many books on drawing monsters. J. David Spurlock's How to Draw Chiller Monsters... stands out from the crowd in a number of ways.
A) It is written in a way that works for everyone from beginners to professionals.
B) Includes standard step-by-step but, like college art courses, adds unique Monster Art Appreciation.
C) Entertaining read which is occasionally reminiscent of Famous Monster magazine founder, Forrey Ackerman.
D) Art by Spurlock and current artists like David Hartman, Kerry Gammill and World of Warcraft artist Alex Horley.
E) Includes art by an unprecedented list of classic monster artists including Basil Gogos, Frank Frazetta, Bernie Wrightson, Jim Steranko and Dracula artist, Gene Colan.
This book is much more than just another How to Draw Monsters book. My copy will be read and savored over and over again. It has my highest recommendation.

Not exactly the best book.

This book has good images, but if you're looking for a book that teaches you how to draw zombies and vampires step by step along with shading and color then you'll only get the color/shading part. It has no step by step procedures on how to draw individual monsters, and only has examples of drawings by artists who draw this stuff for a living. It has some single "how to's" like using standard shapes to make the general shape of a monster or shading techniques, but other than that nothing else. My advice, if you have very good drawing abilities then you can just copy from the book, but if you can't draw very well without an instructional book then i suggest Hell Beasts: How to Draw Grotesque Fantasy Creatures by Jim Pavelec. It shows you step by step procedures on monsters and it also provides inspirational tips. So again, if you can draw very well, then get this book for inspiration or copying of the images, if you can't draw without step by step procedures and written explanations, then you should get the other book i suggested, Hell Beasts by Jim Pavelec.

A good sampling of favorite Disney songs

This music book contains 54 Disney songs arranged for piano, vocal, and guitar. The songs come from Disney movies, TV shows, and short cartoons from the beginning up to the present. Most of the favorites are here: Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Lady and the Tramp, The Little Mermaid, Mary Poppins and the 101 Dalmatians, among others. Davy Crockett fans will be particularly pleased that 20 verses of The "Ballad of Davy Crockett" are included.
This collection is not exhaustive. The book is not particularly pretty--there are no pictures aside from the cover. The music itself is not too easy or too hard--if you're looking for a musical challenge, you won't find it here--but if you're looking for music that will provide a variety of pleasant playing and listening for Disney music fans, you've found it.

This is a great Disney Collection of classic Disney songs. It stops at Little Mermaid, so keep that in mind. But all the pieces are great Disney songs from past films. I've actually gone through a couple of them I have used them so much. Voice Lessons To Go's -Vocalize!- I always warm up with that first though!

The book of lies...

At work, this book has come to be known as the "Book of Lies." Examples are sparse, entries are omitted (e.g. NODEFAULT() is mentioned in the companion text, but no entry in this "comprehensive" language reference). Alphabetization leaves much to be desired, as spaces count: "List Property" comes before "ListBox" but yet underscore prefixes (as in _Tally) are alpha'd as if the underscore isn't there. The "SEE ALSO" sections of each entry are sickly sparse...referencing only the most closely knit topics with nothing broader. I use it because I have it, not because it's good (by *any* stretch of the imagination). A miserable excuse for a dump of the equally pathetic on-line help.

I like to keep a "1166-page language reference" next to me..

I would recommend this book to your library. Nothing better than having a printed language reference next to you. Online reference is good, but sometimes you just want to bookmark a section and go back to that section from time to time. Microsoft Press had a few flaws here and there, nothing major.
I wish so bad Microsoft Press could release a nice printed Language Reference for Visual FoxPro 8. It's just convenient to have that right there when you need it.
Get this book if you like a printed reference (like me). Otherwise just use the online reference.

About the Author

Arnold Robbins, an Atlanta native, is a professional programmer and technical author. He has been working with Unix systems since 1980, when he was introduced to a PDP-11 running a version of Sixth Edition Unix. His experience also includes multiple commercial Unix systems, from Sun, IBM, HP and DEC. He has been working with GNU/Linux systems since 1996. He likes his Macintosh laptop, but it has been commandeered by one of his daughters.

Arnold has also been a heavy awk user since 1987, when he became involved with gawk, the GNU project's version of awk. As a member of the POSIX 1003.2 balloting group, he helped shape the POSIX standard for awk. He is currently the maintainer of gawk and its documentation.

O'Reilly has been keeping him busy: He is author and/or coauthor of the bestselling titles: Unix In A Nutshell, Effective awk Programming, sed & awk, Classic Shell Scripting, and several pocket references.

Elbert is a professional software engineer and software architect recently finishing a 21-year career in the telcom industry. He wrote a full screen editor in assembler in 1983 as his first professional assignment, and has had special interest in editors since. He loves connecting Unix to anything and once wrote a stream editor program to automate JCL edits for mainframe monthly configurations by streaming mainframeJCL to a stream editor on an RJE connected Unix box.

He loves tinkering with everything Unix and considers any environment incomplete without his suite of Unix work-alike tools and the latest version of vim. He is a Unix Shell specialist, writing entire applications with only the shell.

His telcom honored him with their highest award for money-saving applications that he authored using a set of mainframe screen-scraping tools he wrote himself. They continue to use those applications today. He was also one of three founding team members that brought web 1.0 to the corporate consciousness in his telco position, and his team featured on the cover of CIO Magazine for their innovative and pioneering works.

He also served a brief stint on the original Microsoft NT beta support team in 1992.

He loves bicycling, music, and reading. Today he lives in the Chicago area where he occasionally takes on short term projects and works on personal software products.

Linda Lamb is a former employee of O'Reilly Media, where she worked in various capacities, including technical writer, editor of technical books, and marketing manager. She also worked on O'Reilly's series of consumer health books, Patient Centered Guides.

How To Really Learn Vim

I use TextMate for writing code and for most text editing while I'm on the Mac (although I'm editing this review with MacVim version 7.3, otherwise I'd feel dirty). Everywhere else I use vi and Vim (Windows/Linux/OpenBSD/etc.) I spent years using Emacs and gradually made the shift to Vim a few years ago. I found Vim to be lighter weight and easier to configure than Emacs. Anyway, if you're tackling an uber-editor like Vim, you need a really great book. For Vim, that book is "Learning the vi and Vim Editors".

The book initially introduces you to vi and ex, giving you the most basic commands. Pay attention to these first few chapters as it lays the foundation for the rest of the book. You'll move on to learn about global replacement and the power of regular expressions in the context of text replace commands. A short chapter is devoted to advanced editing features and takes you through basic vi customizations, how to execute Unix commands, how to filter text within vi through Unix commands, abbreviations to simplify repetitious typing, mapping keys to simplify repetitious keystrokes, and some basic ex scripting.

A very brief chapter introduces you to the major vi clones. Then, a really beefy section spanning chapters 9 through 15, covering 159 pages, takes you through Vim in great detail. All the major differences between vi and Vim are discussed. You'll learn about multi-window editing, the specifics of Vim scripting, GVim (the GUI version of Vim), and Vim enhancements related to software developers.

Following the Vim section of the book, there are small chapters that describe each of the other major vi clones, including nvi, elvis and vile. Near the end of the book, you'll find the appendixes crammed full of vi and ex commands. Additionally, there is a brief section on setttings for vi, nvi, elvis, Vim and vile. As if that's not enough, the final appendix throws in some comic strips for a little vi humor [...]

I was actually suprised to find a lack on information on both registers and macros. Vim has support for these two extremely useful features, yet the book does not go into detail. Of course, the book does cover the help system, and if there is anything you want to know about Vim, you'll find it well documented in the help system. Learning to use the help system is a key to learning the editor and becoming more proficient by being able to take advantage of its features.

If you've never worked with a truly powerful text editor, prepare to be enlightened. Spend the time necessary to really learn your editor (whatever it may be) and it will pay a huge dividend in return. If you choose to take on the power of vi or Vim (or any other vi-like editor), equip yourself with this book to help guide you through the learning curve.

Probably the best single package of information for Vim / GVim you're going to find

If you want to reap the efficiencies of Vim, then you'll enjoy this book.

The other reviews have pretty much said it all. So the only thing I'll add is that Vim has an extremely powerful regular expressions ("REGEX") find/replace capability. Learning REGEX is an exercise unto itself, but if you learn a bit of Vim find/replace, and bit of its REGEX syntax, you can do some right powerful text manipulatin' right there in the editor...
