About the Author
Timothy Masters received a PhD in mathematical statistics with a specialization in numerical computing. Since then he has continuously worked as an independent consultant for government and industry. His early research involved automated feature detection in high-altitude photographs while he developed applications for flood and drought prediction, detection of hidden missile silos, and identification of threatening military vehicles. Later he worked with medical researchers in the development of computer algorithms for distinguishing between benign and malignant cells in needle biopsies. For the last twenty years he has focused primarily on methods for evaluating automated financial market trading systems. He has authored five books on practical applications of predictive modeling: Practical Neural Network Recipes in C++ (Academic Press, 1993) Signal and Image Processing with Neural Networks (Wiley, 1994) Advanced Algorithms for Neural Networks (Wiley, 1995) Neural, Novel, and Hybrid Algorithms for Time Series Prediction (Wiley, 1995) Assessing and Improving Prediction and Classification (CreateSpace, 2013)

Poor Self-Publishing Effort -- Many Better Resources Available

I really wanted to like these books but the quality is just too low. TM thinks that just b/c some C++ code is included that the writing doesn't matter. The explanations of core concepts are terrible. There are many typos and confusing sentences and even whole paragraphs that just don't make sense. Much of the content for the other two books just copies content word for word from each other. There is very little in the other two volumes. Literally, whole sections are copied and pasted into Vol 2 and Vol 3. There a very few diagrams of anything and the diagrams and graphs that are included are of such low quality as to not be useful. I really want to support self publishing but these books are basically C++ code documentation. With all the DNN frameworks available such as Caffe, Torch, Theano, TensorFlow, CNTK there really isn't much point in studying this guys C++ code. Not to mention there is cuDNN with many of these core operations implemented.

There are many good resources on the internet that are of much higher quality. Checkout Michael Nielsen's free on-line book, also deep learning dot net has many good resources. Additionally NVIDIA offers self-study course for deep learning (just google) and also their deep learning institute (again just google).

Deep Belief (Learning) Networks Are An Important Advance in Machine Learning

First, I must disclose that I have known Dr. Masters for 20 years and have collaborated with him on various projects including a book we co-authored.(Statistically Sound Machine Learning for Algorithmic Trading of Financial Instruments). In addition he was a crucial adviser on my book Evidence Based Technical Analysis. He is also a friend.

With that said, Dr. Masters is a person of integrity, humility, intellectual honesty and competence. When he became interested in Deep Belief Networks, also known as Deep Learning Nets, I took that as a signal that this was a truly important development in the field of machine learning and I’d better get my admittedly slow human intellect exposed to DBNs.

Amazon allows you to look inside the book so I won't reiterate the table of contents or outline what the book contains. Interested readers can do that themselves.

The key point for interested readers is this: deep belief networks represent an important advance in machine learning due to their ability to autonomously synthesize features. Feature engineering, the creating of candidate variables from raw data, is the key bottleneck in the application of machine learning to any field. If feature engineering is done well, even a relatively weak model, such a multiple linear regression can produce a useful predictive model. If done poorly, even the most powerful machine learning methods will fail. Thus feature engineering is the "without-which-not" of success. Of particular importance is that the feature engineering conducted by a DBN is performed in an unsupervised fashion ( no reference to the target variable). Thus if it takes a DBN numerous layers to self-organize the critical problem features, there is no risk of over-fitting was would occur if the target variable were to be considered during this phase of model training. The target variable is only considered by a DBN after feature engineering is complete. Of course this threatens the key role currently played by "domain experts" upon whom the feature engineering task currently falls. These people may find themselves on the same unemployment line as truck-drivers put out of work by self-driving 18 wheelers, and tax advisors whose job has been usurped by IBM’s Watson computer.

What this book does is bring you up to speed in this very exciting area of machine learning. Background material is written in an intuitive fashion that allows the non-expert reader to grasp the big ideas. But then there is in depth discussion of theory, application and actual code for the expert.

This book is absolutely amazing. There are people that use prebuilt machine learning libraries and then there are those that actually make those libraries. As a result from studying this book my machine learning models have not only dramatically improved in accuracy but they have dramatically improved in execution speed as well. This is an absolute must have for any machine learning / artificial intelligence practitioner.

Enjoyed

Different , and unexpected for a shifter story. Took awhile for the two hero's to get their act together concerning how to become a real triad. The Dragon war added a lot of danger and suspense. I don't think that the billionaire title is very pertinent to the story. The dragons were the key to everything that happened, money was just a side issue. Loved how The relationships became so happily resolved . Although it was surprisingly light on menage sex. Wish the ending wasn't such a quick wrap up.

I enjoyed this story. The characters are likable which made for an enjoyable read. The story and plot were interesting with the rival clan angle and two dragon shifters wanting her. Wilhelm, Cara and Ryo were good together once they got to that point. I enjoyed the drama, romance and interaction with the three characters. The ending was nice, enjoyed.

Gottschalk's book is enthusiastic, highly readable and does not attempt to be too definitive in its explorations. Bringing the 'Experimantal' back to contemporary music.

I am sitting in a room different from the one you are in now. I am recording my thoughts pertaining to the ideas Ms. Gottschalk describes in her great new book and I am going to refer to it again and again to my friends until the resonant frequencies of my enthusiasm reinforce the need to read this book. Any semblance of routine, except for the depth of scholarship, is destroyed. What you will read, then, are the natural resonant frequencies of the genre (Experimental Music) articulated by speech. This is not just a 'Contemporary Music' history, the word 'Experimental' is perfectly descriptive. 'Indeterminancy', 'Silence', 'Acts of discovery', 'Harmonic relations', 'Playing with numbers', 'Learning by making', 'Finding hidden sounds'; the section titles lead us into a world of sound not widely known outside academia. Ms. Gottschalk has also published a resource guide to accompany the book with links to the music at [...] I regard this activity not so much as a demonstration of a physical fact, but more as a way to assist the reader in any problems they may have in finding this music. Congratulations to Jennie Gottschalk and Bloomsbury Academic for bringing us this essential work.

Since the debut of his international bestseller The Blue Day Book, Bradley Trevor Greive has become a household name in more than 115 countries. A former Australian paratrooper, BTG left the army to pursue more creative misadventures. He has been bitten by wild monkeys and rabid bats and was accepted into Russia's cosmonaut training program--though those incidents were, by and large, unrelated. BTG spends most of his time in a tiny Tasmanian hamlet.

I ordered this book to give to a friend as a hostess gift when I visit her next month.
The subtitle of the book is "The True Value of Friendship." I somehow cannot associate the caption that, "Great friends cannot be manufactured in a laboratory by an evil genius," as being a factor of the value of friendship. Yes; it's meant to be clever and possibly funny, but it's just not my kind of humor. Some of the animals are dressed in costumes, such as pigs in grass skirts or a dog wearing glasses at a computer, and other dogs wearing clothes that may be pajamas. (A matter of individual taste, of course.) Near the end of the book are a dozen or so very negative things about "friends" who aren't really friends, such as bullies, drama queens, or those who are unreliable. Had I been the author or the editor, I would have omitted those pages and focused on the positive. The photos aren't great quality, and unrealistic color tints don't help, either.
At the same time as purchasing this book, I also purchased FRIENDS FOREVER, by Anne Rogers Smyth. Had I been shopping in a bookstore and looked at both books, I would have chosen FRIENDS FOREVER and not both. (See my review of the other book, if you're interested.) I would not purchase FRIENDS TO THE END again, and it will not be a gift for my friend, as previously planned.

It covers not only the fun and intimate rewards of friends, but also those areas that rub us raw and make us want to go running away screaming. Doing so with the marvelous pictures captures the savory moments and makes beautiful light of the joy in long-standing friends.

I bought this for an entire circle of friends as momentos for whom I wanted something very special to capture the depth we had just gained with each other in working through difficulty and refinement with each other. It was absolutely perfect as a treasure gift.

Elephant Hunting classic

The old adage "Can't tell a book by the cover" certainly held true for the second of Bell's well-written accounts of hunting the African elephant. Unlike his other titles, this book covers a single year long adventure into what was then, the uncharted Karamojo region of central Africa. Bell gives a first hand account of camp life, native interactions, jungle politics and the unyielding search for premium elephant country. To quote from his descriptions of the trip, "this was a hunting safari, first and last". As a result, his writing does not suffer from the slow sections that force less experienced authors to embellish or referencing the age-old ballistic tables from the Birmingham Proof House. Soon after beginning, I understood that Bell did not act or plan on anything that didn't fit in with his goal of hunting elephants. This relentless focus at a time when there were complete regions of Africa that no European man had ventured through, enabled him to emerge in good health and spirits after bagging one hundred eighty elephant in fourteen months. Compare this to the other successful ivory hunters of the period who averaged between seventeen to twenty-five elephant per year and you begin to understand why he was considered the absolute best at his profession. Karamojo Safari is among my favorite titles for many reasons but if forced to choose one then it would have to be Bell's ability to describe the feelings and passions associated with hunting in general. Clearly, he loved hunting in Africa and this enabled him to be consistently successful. A century ago at the end of his life, it was not only Walter's ability with a rifle that what made him both rich and famous, but also his skill with the pen that has ultimately maintained his legendary status making Karamojo Safari a classic Africana title.
